Experience

Emily on 'Bailey'
Emily began riding at age 7 on her family's dairy farm in south-central Pennsylvania. She joined Blue Mountain Pony Club in 1986 and participated in eventing, dressage, show jumping, know-down (now "quiz") and polocrosse rallies. She bought Graphite, a 5-year old home-bred Thoroughbred gelding in 1993 and brought him to preliminary level eventing and second level dressage before graduating as an HA in 1997. Emily trained as a working student with Jane Cory at Pleasant Hollow Farm in Coopersburg, PA, before attending Virginia Tech to study equine science. After graduating in 2001 with a B.S. in Animal Science (cum laude), Emily, Graphite and two new horses, Cricket and Austin, returned to Pennsylvania. Emily obtained qualifications as a C-3 examiner as she continued to teach lessons and volunteer with Pony Clubs in Maryland and neighboring regions.
In 2003 and 2004, Emily lived in Norwich, England, to ride with established show jumper and trainer Steven Tibbles. While in England, she rode to hounds, started young horses, competed in show jumping, and rode out extensively. In particular, Emily learned to produce jumping horses. Emily's riding has also been influenced by instruction and clinics with Kim Walnes, Denny Emerson, Jim Koford, and Jonathan Willis. She rides with Steve Tibbles several times each year when he travels to the States.
She returned to the family farm in 2006 to establish her training and lesson program. Emily manages her 20-horse operation with emphasis on creating sound and safe mounts for fox hunting, eventing, pony club and open competition. She currently is bringing along several young horses and is scheduled to compete at several events this year. She whips for Blue Mountain Hunt. Emily teaches lessons to children, teens and adults at her farm; trains client horses; and travels to other farms for clinics and individual instruction. She remains very active with USPC, serving as DC of Blue Mountain Pony Club and traveling regionally to teach, coach, and conduct ratings for various clubs. Two of her students qualified for the 2009 USPC National Championships in Lexington, Virginia, where Emily coached them together with four additional riders on the two Maryland Region Show Jumping Teams. Two of her students competed at the 2011 USPC National Championships in Lexington, Kentucky, in eventing and show jumping. They competed on two horses, Cricket and Pippin, that were entirely started and trained by Emily.
